It is clear this season of the Real Housewives of New Jersey, Melissa Gorga has a target on her back with fans of the show calling for her to be fired. The level of Twitter chatter is out of control. There are polls, memes, and profiles all dedicated to her demise.
Melissa Gorga joined the show in its third season and quickly became a fan favorite which seemed to annoy sister in-law, RHONJ star Teresa Guidice. Their beef goes back years, Teresa blaming Melissa for putting a strain on her relationship with brother Joe Gorga. Joe Gorga and Teresa’s ex-husband Joe Guidice famously got into a brawl at baby Joe Gorga’s christening. Years have passed but the family feud continues.
Teresa and Joe Guidice went to prison (at separate times) and have since divorced. While Teresa was “away,” Melissa and Joe Gorga filmed with Joe Guidice and daughters Gia, Gabriella, Milania, and Audriana to help keep the show going. Melissa claims that she put “food on their table” was enough to start World War Three. Teresa insist if it weren’t for her, Melissa would be nowhere.
Teresa went as far as excluding Melissa and Joe from her wedding to Louie Ruelas. She later invited Melissa to be a bridesmaid, Melissa declined. It appears as if Teresa is trying to ice Joe and Melissa Gorga out of the picture. I could be wrong, but it comes across as if a newly married Teresa feels like she doesn’t need anyone else and is being protected by her so-called “love bubble.” However, as we all know bubbles eventually tend to burst. I reached out to Melissa to ask if she agreed with my assessment. She responded, “You hit the nail right on the head!” Boom!

The first time I saw Demi Moore in person was in 2011. I was living in New York and attending Kabbalah classes on the regular. I went to a party in celebration of Purim where you are expected to wear a costume. The idea is by wearing a costume, we feel free to reveal our true selves. Instead longtime friend Amanda de Cadenet conducted the interview which seemed to put Demi at ease. Inside Out is divided into three parts. Survival, Success and Surrender. By the time, she reached “success” Demi was making hit movies, married to Bruce Willis and a mother of three girls. She made headlines posing nude while pregnant for the cover of Vanity Fair. During the Q&A, Demi reflected on how her grandmother told her how women at church judged pregnant women. Whispering “isn’t it time she stayed home.” As if being pregnant was something to be ashamed of, Demi was happiest at this moment and wanted to celebrate motherhood.

It was late spring 1997, I just completed my junior year of college and was back home in Brooklyn for break. It was a hot beautiful day. Feeling bored, I jumped on the D train and headed to the West Village to do some shopping and cruising. I strolled over to the Christopher Street pier to take in the sun and the sights – cute boys were everywhere. After sunset, I headed towards 7th Ave to catch the train home. As I walked down the subway stairs, I noticed a wanted poster; a suspected gay spree killer was on the loose. I stopped dead in my tracks and took a mental note.
When I arrived home, I called my best friend Leslie and told her about my day and the creepy poster. She said, “don’t worry about it, you wouldn’t be going to the type of places where someone like that would be lurking.” I can’t remember the exact timing, but later saw on the local news a report about the man on the poster. His name was Andrew Cunanan. Cunanan was wanted for several murders across the country. One of his victims, architect David Madson was found rolled up in a rug with a gunshot wound to his head. Cunanan made his way to Chicago where he took his next victim. The authorities suspected he would perhaps flee to New York City where he could easily blend into the large gay community.
The next week, I desperately needed a night out. I asked Leslie to meet me at a now defunct gay sports bar in Chelsea called Champs. When I arrived, the bar was somewhat empty but filled up as it got closer to midnight. Leslie was late and my beer was getting warm. I spotted a handsome guy sitting on a small stage near the dance floor, I smiled. I couldn’t help thinking he looked familiar but could not place him. When he smiled back, I approached and introduced myself. I offered to buy him a beer. He said, “yes.” I think it was a Bud Lite. As the weeks passed, I forgot about that night, the wanted poster and the weirdo. It was another beautiful day, I woke up late and went down to the kitchen to eat breakfast. There was a copy of the Daily News on the table. Gianni Versace had been murdered. He went for a morning walk to pick up a newspaper and was shot in front of his Miami mansion. I flipped to the story – to find a picture of the suspect. Now, I would recognize him. I looked at his name – it was Andrew. I told my Mom but I’m not sure she believed me. I grabbed the paper and ran upstairs. I read the rest of the article and nearly fainted.
Andrew Cunanan would spend 8 days on the run before he took his own life in a show down with police on a houseboat where he had been squatting. Although, Cunanan was dead…I called the crime show America’s Most Wanted. If anything, I hoped to help establish a timeline. As it turns out, he was New York around the time he murdered victim number four, William Reese in New Jersey. Police linked him to hotel receipts…Cunanan had been staying at the West Side Club; a gay sex club where you could rent cheap private rooms. Thank God, I didn’t leave with him that night. I was terrified.
The following spring, I graduated college. By fall, I was working as an Executive Assistant at USA Network. It was fashion week and I was in my early 20’s. Meaning, I could go out on a week night and be perfectly fine the next day. I decided to go to Splash, a famous gay bar around the corner from where I met Andrew. I had several drinks and got caught up in the music….the next thing I knew Donatella Versace walked in with an entourage of exotic gay men.
At this point, I was pretty drunk and joined Donatella and her boys on the dance floor. My moves must have caught her attention….she pulled me into the circle formed around her. As she whipped her straw-like blonde hair in my face, we engaged in a dance off to Whitney Houston’s “Your Love is My Love.”After a while, Donatella and entourage left the club. I felt dirty knowing I bought the man who murdered her brother a beer. It was surreal to say the least.
Fast forward to around 2005. I was sitting by a fire place in the lobby at the Four Seasons in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. By then, I was working at Glamour Magazine and was there for a National Sales Meeting. Our San Francisco Sales Rep, Kurt DeMars randomly started talking about Andrew. Turns out, they knew each other. In fact, Andrew would use his name as an alias while on the run. But the connection doesn’t end there. Last year, I was booked on FX’s Versace: American Crime Story. I worked in an airport scene with Darren Criss who played Andrew. He looked so much like him. I wanted to share my story, but most likely would have been escorted off set. Each time I saw Darren, a mental flashback would hit. I tired to make sense of it all but couldn’t. It’s like everything came full circle in that moment. The most valuable lesson; I learned to trust my instincts.
All these years later, I am still haunted by my brief encounter with one of the worlds most notorious serial killers.
It’s been a wild week, I don’t even know where to begin. But I know how I want to celebrate the weekend! By sharing how I ended up at The Mint (LA) Wednesday night watching Katey Sagal perform live with her band The Reluctant Apostles.
Most know Katey Sagal from her portrayal of television’s two most unconventional moms. As the comical, money hungry, cigarette smoking, bonbon eating, hands off mom Peggy Bundy on “Married With Children.”
And the (I’ll kick your ass if you F’ with my family) Gemma Teller Morrow on FX’s “Sons Of Anarchy” which Katey won a Golden Globe Award for Best Performance by an actress in a television drama (2011). “Sons Of Anarchy” was created, written, produced and directed by Kurt Sutter, Katey’s equally multi-talented husband.
I’ve been a fan of Katey Sagal for years and know of her role on “SOA” but didn’t watch the show until recently. My friend and energy healer, Leda Beluche (aka @GirlieVegan) who helps guide me, suggested I watch the show. She’s a huge fan and said “as an aspiring actor, I needed to tap into the themes of the show (loyalty, family and heart).” That said, I opened a Hulu account. Soon after, I got booked as a background actor working on a pilot called “Nana” starring Katey Sagal! But wait, it doesn’t end there. Leda also said, “I envision you working on the “SOA” spin-off series, “Mayans.” I put it on my mental goal list.
A few weeks later, Leda flew to Detroit to attend Motor City Comic Con. She was there for a yoga workshop lead by “Sons Of Anarchy” alumni Ryan Hurst and Charlie Hunnam (who played Gemma’s son Jax Teller). Leda says, “Gemma is the heart and Jax is the heartbeat of the series.” Long story short (well not really), Leda met Charlie and he tied a sacred protection red string around her wrist. And I kid you not, a couple of days later, I was booked on “Mayans.”
Katey recently tweeted she and The Reluctant Apostles had a show coming up at The Mint. I didn’t have the money to attend. It was only 15 dollars but I’m a struggling artist and every penny counts. With that, Leda gifted me a ticket. I was so excited, I tweeted Katey to let her know and she responded!
So Wednesday night, I jumped in my car, after a long shoot day, and headed to The Mint for the 8pm show. When I arrived, I felt a like a fish out of water (a gay boy from Brooklyn, who doesn’t drink, standing in a room with bikers). But as soon as Katey arrived I felt at home.
Before Katey established herself as an actress, she began her career as a singer. Singing back up along side musical legends Etta James, Tanya Tucker, Bob Dylan, Better Midler and Olivia Newton-John. As Katey mentioned Wednesday night, “I would sing for anyone; I needed to pay the rent.” I can relate.
The band comprised of Davey Faragher (Elvis Costello, Richard Thompson) on bass and vocals, Phil Shenale (Tori Amos, Jane’s Addiction) on keys, Billy Harvey (Patty Griffin) on guitar and vocals, Michael Urbano (Cracker, Sheryl Crow) on drums, Bob Thiele, Jr. on vocals and guitar (Bonnie Raitt, Mavis & Pop Staples) and Katey Sagal, singing, playing guitar and percussion rocked the stage to a packed house for over an hour. The bands roots dig back to “Sons Of Anarchy,” where, as The Forest Rangers, they acted as the musical muse throughout the show’s 7 seasons. Their sound an eclectic mix of rock, folk and soul. My favorite moment was when the band performed a heartfelt rendition of “Shining Star” by The Manhattans. Katey’s vocals pulled at my heart strings and brought tears to my eyes. Made me think of one of my angels in heaven. It was an incredible night that I will cherish forever.

About a month ago, I was booked on the new Drake produced HBO teen drama Euphoria starring Zendaya. The scene I worked on takes place in a hospital waiting room, I was placed behind Zendaya with what was supposed to be a crying child. The little boy didn’t want to cry but we made it work. This Sunday, Euphoria premiered and I was captivated. The show is an American adaptation of the Israeli show of the same name. It centers around Rue (Zendaya), a 17yr old drug addict. Although Rue just left rehab, she has no intention of staying sober. However; she will do her best to appear that way, most of all to her mother. It is implied Rue’s addiction is directly linked to her Mom forcing her into therapy and putting her on prescription drugs as a small child. Rue finds Euphoria when she gets high and is able to block out the world if only for a moment.
Euphoria comes with a warning label. Zandaya posted on Instagram, “Euphoria is for mature audiences. It’s a raw and honest portrait of addiction, anxiety, and the difficulties of navigating life today. There are scenes that are graphic, hard to watch, and can be triggering.” She’s right and I would advise if you have a teenage child watch it before OR with them. Both of you might have questions; the show is meant to spark dialog.
In the pilot episode, we also met some of Rue’s counterparts. Most notable, Jules, a transgender girl played by Hunter Schafer searching for her place in the world; in the wrong places that is. Jules has a drug problem of her own and while on a bender, meets up with a guy (Eric Dane) she chats with on Grindr in a motel room. A dangerous but realistic exploration of sexuality. As Jules approaches the motel room, you have an erie feeling nothing good will happen. Her character is based on show creator Sam Levinson’s own struggle with drug addition and Hunter’s personal experiences as a trans-teen.
Euphoria is addicting – I can’t wait to watch more. Its one of those shows that pulls you in instantly. Being that I’m in one of the episodes, I’ll enjoy trying to spot myself too. Excited to be part of the show even in a small way! Euphoria airs Sundays at 10pm on HBO.

She got into a drunken altercation with a police officer and was previously arrested for shoplifting at Target. Since then Kim completed community service and has maintained her sobriety. She’s made guest appearances on the show and fans love her. During an appearance on SiriusXM’s The Jenny McCarthy Show, Sister Kyle, referenced rumors that Kim would return to show for its tenth season. “I would love to see Kim back. The audience loves her and you know she has a lot going on in her life right now. She has two new grandchildren actually. If anything, being on the show made her accountable and she says that as well. She says that it saved her life because, you know, there’s nowhere to hide and everyone knows — now anywhere she goes, people know who she is. She can’t get away with anything! It’s been nine years since MTV’s hit reality show The Hills went off the air. I’ll start by admitting not only was I fan, I own the entire series on DVD! I remember working for Marc Anthony and sitting at my desk with The Hills playing on the television behind me. I was obsessed. Lauren Conrad and Whitney Port were “interns” at Teen Vogue. But they really didn’t do much of anything except gossip about boys and rummage through clothing racks (career goals).

The aspiring fashionista’s did have an occasional task here and there. Whitney was offered an assignment in Paris. Lauren turned it down and would forever be the girl given an opportunity of a lifetime opting to move to the beach with her on and off again alcoholic boyfriend Jason Wheeler. The relationship ended but that didn’t stop Lauren from following her fashion dreams. Both Lauren and Whitney would go on to launch successful fashion brands.

Then there was the drama between Lauren and roommate Heidi Montag. Heidi was a “good girl” until she had major plastic surgery and hooked up with Hollywood bad boy Spencer Pratt. Spencer caused a riff between Lauren and Heidi; their friendship never recovered. Fast forward to 2019, I no longer own a DVD player but still have an affection for the show. On June 24th, MTV airs The Hills: New Beginnings which will unite most of the cast following their “new beginnings;” babies included. However; Lauren Conrad will not appear. That’s disappointing because without Lauren there wouldn’t have been a show in the first place. Lauren first appeared on Laguna Beach in High School before venturing off to Los Angeles and The Hills. Oddly, OC actress Mischa Barton and Brandon Lee (son of Pam and Tommy) join the cast. Not exactly sure how they fit into the web? But I’m looking forward to finding out!

That said, don’t give up on your dreams; no matter where you are in life. I’m 43 and only got that type confidence as an adult. But that’s OK. Sometimes we aren’t ready or have to overcome obstacles in order to reach our full potential. Anyway, its time to have fun, take risk and enjoy the sweet sounds of summer!

Friday night, Paula Abdul kicked off LA Pride in West Hollywood with a free Opening Ceremony concert. I was luckily enough to be invited to cover the event. And it was to die for! Paula told the crowd of nearly 20,000, she “always wanted to be asked to perform at Pride.” And we were glad she was because her performance was everything and a bag of chips.

Sue Ann quickly develops a kinship with the group of teenagers. She is like their big sister or adopted MA. Sue Ann becomes obsessed and will stop at nothing to keep the party going.
Sue Ann wasn’t popular in High School herself. As it turns out, Sue Ann went to school with the parents of her adopted crew. As a teenager, Sue Ann was bullied and sexually abused. Now, it’s time for revenge!
There are a handful of “jump out of your seat” moments, plenty of gore and uncomfortable laughs. Octavia’s performance is brilliant. She draws you in; you want to party with her too. But you also feel sorry for her because of what she went through. And at the same time are scared shitless. With the literal blink of an eye, Octavia makes the transformation from sympathetic Sue Ann to malicious MA flawlessly. If I could give her an Oscar, I would.
Octavia is joined by Allison Janney (Sue Ann’s boss) and Juliette Lewis in outstanding supportive roles. MA is in theaters now. Go see it!
