Last Monday, marked my long awaited return to acting school. I took the summer off but I’m back in learning mode. After walking out of a level 2 class a few weeks ago, I transferred into a level one class that meets Monday nights at 7pm.

From the moment I walked in, I was greeted by my fellow students; welcomed with open arms! It was one of those moments when you exhale and realize that you have arrived to the place you are supposed to be.

After a series of trust exercises, we were asked to tell a story of when we experienced physical pain, to present an object and sing a song. The other students had a week to prepare – but I did mine on the fly. I even sang a verse of Like A Virgin. Piece of cake, right?!

This week our assignment is to present a quote by an actor or artist on acting. I had a good one by Johnny Depp but instead I’m going with a quote tweeted to me by Johnathon Schaech. As you can see in the photo….he once told me “never stop, you’ll heal the parts that are broken and awaken the sleeping ones”……

This really resonated with me for a few reasons. Growing up a as a gay child I never felt like I belonged anywhere or to any group. I was extremely shy, I would do very well one on one but I was never a team player.

This feeling carried over into my life for many years, the thought of acting, presenting, performing equaled terror.

By joining an acting class, I’ve released years of fear and anxiety. I’m healing that part of myself by awakening my inner voice. By digging up past experiences, emotions and memories I can learn to express and correct myself.
