Jewel Picks Up The Pieces

jewel

Jewel emerged on the music scene in 1995 – having spent her childhood living on a homestead in Alaska, she didn’t exactly have it easy.  At age 8, she would occpany her parents’ entertainment act playing in hotels and local bars. By 18, she left Alaska for Califorina where she found herself homeless living out of a van.  Luck would have it, a radio DJ played a bootleg version of one of her songs.  By 21, her debut album Pieces of You topped the charts. Jewel would go on to sell over thirty millions albums over the course of her career.

Don’t be fooled, this is no Cinderella story. Jewel chronicles her journey in the new memoir Never Broken. Jewel recounts her days shoplifting for food, being thrust into the limelight,  her controlling  manager mom, having to write the ill-suited pop song “Intuition” to promote Schick razors as a way out of monumental debt and struggles with relationships including her divorce  from husband of 6yrs, Ty Murray.

At a book signing and in store appearance Monday at Barnes & Nobel in New York City, she told the crowd “when I was homeless, I found myself wanting to steal a 40 dollars dress, I questioned why couldn’t I earn the money?” She knew that she needed to change paths. As for her divorce the singer-songwriter said “I looked at my son and realized I wasn’t the woman I wanted him to see me as, I needed to work on myself.” “After the break up, I could have had a bunch of random sex but instead I focused on my art which I lost sight of – I became domesticated.”

Jewel threw herself into writing and recording music. She wanted to create something organic “without label input or producers.”  As a result, we are left with Picking Up The Pieces – a beautiful collection of folk songs. Some of which she wrote 20yrs ago but never recorded.  Jewel has come full circle offering fans her best effort in years – standouts include “Plain Jane,” “Pretty Faced Fool,” “Carnivore” and her duet with Dolly Parton “My Father’s Daughter.”  Picking Up The Pieces is a refreshing break from the over-produced, over-marketed music of today.  Here’s a sneak peak of the single “Pretty Faced Fool.” Enjoy!

THEY GOT THE BEAT

California%20Blues%20cover%20-%20final

Singer/Song writer Gabe Lopez  has teamed up with fellow California native and Go-Go’s (one of the most successful all-female bands of all time) front woman, Belinda Carlisle on his latest single “California Blues.” I sat down with Gabe to discuss his latest collaboration with the pop legend and his budding music career.

Gabe, tell me about your musical background – have you always had a passion for music?

Yes, I’ve always loved music and just kind of understood the world through it. It’s how I communicate and it’s how I understand feelings best.

What or who inspired “California Blues?”

The song is about a few people – three in particular. The song is about battling depression and battling life and career blues and then finding comfort and happiness through someone else’s eyes. It’s not a romantic song. It’s really a “thank you” song.

Cool. How did you and Belinda Carlisle start working together?

It’s so funny. Her son found my music when they were living in the south of France and liked what he heard. I sent him a few songs for his mom and she really liked one, which she and I then revamped with Jane Wiedlin to become the single “Sun.” Belinda sounds amazing on that song. She truly shines. She is a master at vocal performance. The song did well. From there she had me as her opener on her 2014 UK tour. I’m so excited that I get to open for her again this year in the US, Canada and the UK. I’m also producing and cowriting her new album with her. She’s a great writer – a natural creator of melodies.

Lucky you! I’ve been a fan since I’m about 5yrs old. I can still remember singing “Our Lips Are Sealed” with my sister and friends while playing with Barbie on the steps of my house in Brooklyn!

I’m curious, as a song writer…what inspires you?

It can be a sentence a friend says, a story, an old building, or a trying time. I try to be open to “the muse,” as it were, and write as best I can.

How do you keep focused on achieving your goals?

Music is the only thing that I know how to do! Haha. Well, and I also absolutely love it. It’s my passion above anything else. It’s not hard to keep focus. I only hate having to sleep.

Where do you see yourself in 5yrs?

There are so many artists I’d love to work with. I have my list. I’d love to get through a lot of my list, maybe get some award nominations, travel more, and create as much as I can.

What advice do you have for those trying to make it in the business?

Make sure you truly have a passion for the music and the art. Learn about “the biz” to navigate the tricky waters. Surround yourself with great people that you trust. Stay humble!

Joan Rivers – I’ll Remember You

400_300_rs_560x415_140828173201_560_2joan_rivers_cm_82814_copy_

My love for Joan Rivers goes back 30yrs. Like many of you, I am deeply saddened by her passing. Although Joan died at 81yrs old, I thought she would live forever; her designer face seemingly timeless. She was smart, funny and had the energy of the Energizer Bunny – Joan was unstoppable!

I remember her on the Tonight Show, giving advice to Miss Piggy at a cosmetics counter in Muppets Take Manhattan and from  her appearences on Hollywood Squares.

She was over the top outrageous and always made me laugh. As a kid, I remember writing for tickets to her talk show. I was so excited when the tickets arrived, I begged my Mom to take me and even got to miss school! The Joan Rivers Show was filmed at CBS on 57th street which was like a world away from my row house in Midwood, Brooklyn. My first glance into the world of entertainment. Lights, camera, action and LiZa! That’s right, LiZa was her guest!!!

This drug is favored by so many because it viagra overnight is readily available, fast acting and has minimal side effects. While Kamagra 100mg is an oral means to cure impotence, two canadian levitra or three times daily. Before the show started, Joan would come out to greet the audience and introduce her friend Hesta who would do the warm up. Joan’s pup, Spike would also make the rounds. On another visit, an audience member took ill. Joan stopped the show and rushed to the woman’s aid. Joan helped walk the woman down the stairs and slipped her daughter her phone number, insisting she call with an update once they got to the hospital. This is why I loved Joan Rivers, she had a heart of gold.

As an adult, we would meet again. Once in Bryant Park on my lunch break where she was interviewing people for a Court TV segment. Yes, I made it on-air! A few months later, my friend (who ironically worked at Court TV) asked if I wanted to film a promo with Joan in Times Square for a show called Hollywood Heat. A group of us dressed up in various costumes – a cop, super hero, judge etc. I was a doctor. We all took turns climing out of a limo – a clown car of sorts – Joan to emerge last. While I was in the car, the pants provided by wardrobe split!!!! Can you believe it? I never laughed so hard!

I would meet Joan AGAIN a few years ago – catching her stand up act. We took a picture and when I asked if she wanted to see it – she said “NO,” (how dare she)!

It’s so amazing how life can come full circle. When I heard Joan passed, it was like a part of me died as well. I cried at work and was not able to sleep through the night; staying up watching clips on YouTube. I will remember Joan Rivers for the incredible person she was and for always keeping it real. Thanks Joan for the memories. ❤️

DEBBIE GIBSON: THE ORIGINAL POP PRINCESS

RayGarciaPhotography.comPhoto:  RayGarciaPhotography.com

Over 25 years ago, 16-year old Debbie Gibson exploded onto the music scene with her debut album “Out of the Blue.” Her self-penned, infectious pop songs “Only In My Dreams” and “Shake Your Love” rose to the top of the Billboard Charts. She became the youngest artist ever to write, produce and perform a #1 hit song, “Foolish Beat.”

debbiegibson_young

1989’s “Electric Youth” paved the path for the music marketing trends of today. She was the first pop star to launch a signature fragrance to support an album. Her image was plastered on the bedroom walls of kids across America.  In fact, she sold more than 16 million albums worldwide –all while keeping her clothes on and maintaining a squeaky clean image.

     ElectricYouth

After conquering the pop world with three consecutive albums and world tours, Debbie set her sights on the theater and starred in 17 musicals in 17 years like “Les Miserables,” “Grease,” “Funny Girl,”  “Beauty and the Beast,”  “Gypsy,” “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat,” “Chicago” and the Broadway revival of “Cabaret” with Neil Patrick Harris. Debbie has also appeared in numerous television and film projects including “Celebrity Apprentice,” “Sing Your Face Off,” the SyFy hit “Mega Python Vs. Gatoroid” (opposite fellow 80’s pop star Tiffany) and most recently starring in the 2015 UP original movie, “The Music In Me.”

When I was a kid, growing up in Brooklyn, I wanted to be her best friend. She lived close by in Merrick, Long Island. I was jealous she had a recording studio above her garage. But knowing  she wrote her own songs and got her start at home inspired me. Debbie made me feel like I could make my dreams come true as well.

I had a fantasy of contacting Debbie asking her to reflect back and to find out what’s going in her world on now. My fantasy became reality – the “Original Pop Princess” agreed to talk.

Debbie, tell me what is the best part of being a pop culture icon?

It may sound cliché but getting to do what I love to do and making other people happy is fabulous!

No, not cliché at all, I think that’s great. It is an artist’s job to uplift others. We do what we do to make others happy.

Let me ask you, if you could step into a time machine and go back to 1987, what message would you deliver to your former self?

Relax and take time to enjoy what’s happening. It’s not a race.

That’s great advice!

Having reached such a high level of success at such a young age, how were you able to manage that?

It wasn’t without its ups and downs. But basically, I’m in this business to be creative and not for the fringe benefits, which tends to keep one grounded and focused.

MJandDG[1]

You were always perceived as a “good girl”….perception or reality?

I’m an authentic girl! I was never into any club scene or drugs or alcohol so if that makes me “good” …then reality. But, I’m not a fan of labels and I wouldn’t say that anyone’s journey is “good” or “bad” as long as they are being themselves and not hurting anyone else.

Tell me something that would surprise people about you.

I can hula-hoop for hours on end without dropping it! Seriously. Also, I was once on CSPAN because I went and spoke to Congress on behalf of artists, and represented ASCAP, when professional caliber digital recording machines were first coming out. Much like Taylor Swift protected artist’s rights with her letter to Apple, I was out to make sure that artists got compensated for their work.

I didn’t know that, that’s cool. I would be terrified to speak to congress!

Also, both buy pill viagra work by increasing the blood flow to the genitals, whether you are male or female. I’m curious, what would be your perfect date?

Well, for starters my current boyfriend would have to be there! (Laughs) And, we would go to our favorite burger joint and I would get sweet potato fries and we would leave the rest of the plan open, cause we hate plans!

Speaking of boyfriends, I heart James Franco, do you have celebrity a crush too?

I’m definitely in the James Franco admiration club too! But, back when I was a kid it was Ricky Schroeder from “Silver Spoons”!

James Franco

Moving on, I read in Billboard you are a Madonna fan. She has been harshly criticized for being too provocative given her age.  What are your thoughts on that?

Everyone deserves to be whoever they are at any age with no regard for others’ perceptions. Madonna is living proof that you can rock it in every decade!

madonna

What advice would you give to an aspiring pop star?

Keep doing what you love to do, and look to be open to collaborating and learning and training all you can. As your career gets further and further along, technique will come in handy and so will your passion for what you do.

debbie gibson-1Photo by Troy Smith

So musically, what’s next for Debbie Gibson??

I’m sitting on a bunch of new songs and I’m dying to record and just waiting for the perfect window of time to do that, which is coming soon!

Cool – I’ll be on the lookout. In the meantime, I’m gonna throw it back to one of your classics and “Shake Your Love” – it’s one of my favorites!

Chris Cuomo The Humble Hero

BsDyTgsCAAAF9ct

I’ve always liked CNN anchor Chris Cuomo, he seems like a good guy and I like the way he presents the news. This summer, I attended a movie premier for the Transgender themed film Carl(a). After the film ended, Chris lead a Q&A with the director and cast. He did an outstanding job, asking insightful questions.

On the way out of the theater, Chris walked past me. I was taken aback by his 6’2 height and stunning blue eyes. He is not only smart but also good looking. In his downtime, the sexy newsman is busy saving lives. This weekend Chris was on his fishing boat with his family near Shelter Island’s Sunset Beach and saved a man from drowning!

Cuomo reluctantly commented on the story only after it came out in the press. He wanted to respect the privacy of the 66 yr. old man and down-played the rescue as “no big deal”.

I reached out to Chris via Twitter to let him know it was a big deal and that I was sure the man would also agree. Chris responded, “Just didn’t want to embarrass him. He was in a situation that anyone would struggle with- I was happy to help.”

If Chris wasn’t there or was too busy to notice, this story could of had a very different outcome. Kudos to Chris for his heroic act of kindness!

Straight Outta Compton

Straight Outta Compton

Straight Outta Compton might just be the most important film of the year. It’s one part entertainment and one part a lesson in American history.  In 1986, MC Ren, Dr. Dre, Eazy-E, DJ Yella and Ice Cube joined forces to create N.W.A. Their lyrics; an honest reflection of issues faced as inner-city youth. As popular as they became N.W.A. was quickly condemned for their “glorification” of drugs, violence,  degradation of woman and anti-establishment rhymes. Their song “Fuck tha Police” only added fuel to the fire.

N.W.A. were poets, storytellers and advocates for free speech. Their music brought attention to the injustices perpetuated by Police on African Americans. Sadly, this very well could take place in 2015.

Straight Outta Compton produced by Dr. Dre and Ice Cube, is thoughtfully directed by F. Gary Gray – it is lush, bold and taps all the senses. N.W.A.’s rise to fame, fortune and eventual demise is brilliantly portrayed by a cast of  talented young actors, MC Ren (Aldis Hodge), Dr. Dre (Corey Hawkins), Eazy-E (Jason Mitchell), DJ Yella (Neil Brown, Jr.) and Ice Cube played by real life son (O’Shea Jackson, Jr,).

It would not surprise me if Corey Hawkins, Jason Mitchell or O’Shea Jackson, Jr.  ended up on an Oscar ballet. Paul Giamatti  does a fine job as Ruthless Records co-founder, Jerry Heller. His partnership and friendship with Eazy-E lends to a deeper subplot of corruption within the music industry.  Unlike other musical bio-pics, Straight Outta Compton lacks the cheese factor, it comes across as an authentic tribute to the pioneers of hip hop.

George Hamilton: The Tan Man

george_hamilton by robert sebree

George Hamilton got his start in acting back in 1952 and over the years has starred in countless films and television shows. But he is most famously known for his suave style and trademark suntan.

At 75yrs old, the “Tan Man”  is enjoying a comeback appearing on the new E! reality series Stewarts & Hamiltons. The show follows the blended family of George and ex-wife Alana Stewart. Alana once married to legendary rocker Rod Stewart, has two children Kimberly and Sean Stewart. George and Alana also have a son,  Ashley Hamilton. Then there’s George Jr.  who George fathered with girlfriend Kimberly Blackford. Wowzers!

Kristy Swanson Slays The Day

headshot car

In 1992, Kristy Swanson starred as Buffy Summers; a teenage cheerleader who hunts vampires in Buffy The Vampire Slayer. Buffy is one of my favorite films of all time! I thought it would be cool to reach out to Kristy to ask her about her iconic role, her film career and what she is up to now.  When I called Kristy, she was enjoying a “Mommy” day and was in the middle of getting a mani/pedi.

Phone rings.

Kristy? Hi, it’s Daymz.

Hi, how are you?

I’m great, just trying to wrap things up in the office before heading to LA for vacation.

Oh nice, I’m getting my nails done.

How fun! Thank you for taking the time. Shall we begin?

Sure, go for it.

Buffy The Vampire Slayer has become a highly popular cult classic. What do you think it is about Buffy Summers that has resonated with fans over the years?

I love the movie too, it’s fun. I think it resonates with people because Buffy was a strong female character that young girls and teens could look up to. I think that is really cool. It also lived on – it went on to be a TV series. It was in people’s living rooms for about seven years.

image

image

Before Buffy you also starred in Flowers in the Attic (1987). Another favorite of mine. I remember watching it over and over as a kid and being terrified.  Betrayal, murder and incest are themes throughout.  What was it like for you as an actress?

I embraced it, I was really young. I was 16yrs old but I was pretty good separating myself from my work. It didn’t freak me out to make the movie. There were days that were really long and drawn out because we were dealing with such a heavy subject. And  sometimes when doing a drama you say to yourself “I wish I was doing a comedy right now” – But it was great. Looking back, it was a great time in my life.

image

image

image

Speaking about heavy subject matters, let’s talk about your film Higher Learning (1994). At films end, we saw what has now become reality; a campus shooting spree. What can people learn from watching Higher Learning today?

Well, the whole point of the film is to learn tolerance of each other, to be ok with our differences. That was the main message, whatever you learn, unlearn it. That’s what John Singleton wanted to get across. School shootings did happen back then -they were few and far between compared to today.

On a lighter note, you posed for Playboy, appeared on Reality TV and ride motorcycles. Have you always been adventurous?

Hold on one second: They screwed up my nails, Lol. Ok, they are fixing it.

It’s fun, it’s something we can do together as a couple and have a good time. It’s freeing – I love it!

Besides being an actress, you are also a clothing designer and have a ladies golf apparel brand. Tell me about aDressitGolf.

aDressitGolf  is a hybrid of resort wear meets golf wear. It’s not your typical golf wear, it’s very fun, chic and girly. But it’s sporty too. www.aDRESSitGOLF.com

Do you golf?

Yeah (chuckles), I do. Another thing my husband and I do together.

Ever thought about expanding the line beyond golf wear?

Not right now, it keeps me pretty busy. But I am thinking of designing an outfit where a portion of the proceeds would go to charity –  like to fund breast cancer for instance.

I noticed on Instagram, you recently cut your hair to support your cousin who is fighting breast cancer. I think that is a testament of someone with great character. What made you do it? What was your cousins reaction?

She said, “that’s so sweet, are you going to go bald with me too?” She loved it, she thought it was really cool. We haven’t seen each other in person yet but she answered me on Facebook. She’s touched by it – it’s a scary time for her but she is going to get through it. Luckily, it was caught early – stage one. They did a lumpectomy and she has to follow up with chemo to make sure it’s completely gone. I wanted to let her know that I support her and that I care.

Encouragement is always beneficial. I strongly believe words have power. If you could deliver a positive message to your fans what would it be?

Oh gosh, you’re really putting me on the spot.

It can be anything.

Always have a sense of humor, keep laughing. Have thick skin but don’t let it harden you. And remember God loves you.

I like it! People need to hear positive things.

So what’s up next for Kristy Swanson?

I have a film coming out called Driven Underground and a movie coming out around Christmas called Angels In The Snow on UP. I just filmed a teen movie called Crowning Jules. I do about two to three films per year.

What’s on your agenda for the rest of your day, after you finish getting your nails done?

I’m gonna do my eye lashes. Then I’m going to have lunch, my whole family is away – I’m all by myself. I’m having a Mommy day.

Enjoy! I’m jealous.

I don’t want to take anymore of your “me” time. I think, I have enough for the interview but if I think of anything else can I give you a call back?

Yes, of course. Thank you so much honey.

Thank you. I’ve been a fan forever. You’re adorable. I love you.

I love you too.

Your Doctor Is Likely to Be Biased Against LGBT People

Doc.

Photo via Advocate.com

I was taken aback by a recent health article that appeared in The Advocate  STUDY: Your Doctor Is Likely to Be Biased Against LGBT People. http://www.advocate.com/health/2015/07/20/study-your-doctor-likely-be-biased-against-lgbt-people  According to a study published by the American Journal of Public Health, “implicit preferences for heterosexual people versus lesbian and gay people are pervasive among heterosexual health care providers.”

I wanted to share my personal account of experiencing this bias  while visiting a dentist many years ago. I was just starting out in my career and was looking for a new dentist. With the recommendation of a coworker, I made an appointment with a dentist in walking distance from our Rockefeller Center location. I figured my visit would routine; X-rays and a cleaning. But instead my “routine” check-up turned into a frightening ordeal.

My gums had been bleeding slightly and I also noticed a few white spots in my mouth. I explained this to my new dentist and she said “let’s take a look.” When I opened my mouth, I noticed her face change. She said, “The white spots were of concern and that I needed to follow up with my medical doctor immediately!” The concern being the spots, in her opinion were associated with Candidiasis. A yeast infection in the mouth; a symptom of a possible HIV infection. Wait, did she just say “HIV?” I was shaken to my core, I only had a few sexual partners and had played safe. I know there are always risk but thought “how could this happen to me?” I felt sick to my stomach and returned to work dazed and confused.

My doctor thought the white spots were more likely be attributed to the overuse the mouth wash I had been using. But as a precaution, he ordered an HIV test. It would take two weeks to get the results. My doctor was livid at the dentist and demanded I give him her number. He said, “She should have not made such an assumption and should have asked to speak with him first about my medical history.” He called her and told her off.

I felt relieved but being a hypochondriac, the next two weeks are a living hell. I didn’t tell anyone what I was going through, I didn’t want to worry my friends and family. So I kept it to myself. I would go to work and go right home after. I remember laying in my bed thinking if I was positive how was going to move forward with my life. How would I treat the disease? What would I say to my sexual partners? How would I tell my mom? My follow up appointment could not come soon enough.

The agonizing two weeks had passed and I fought myself back at my doctor’s office. The results were in – I was HIV negative. When I received the news, it felt like I could breathe again. But my sentiments quickly turned to anger, thinking I had been profiled and discriminated against because of my presumed sexual orientation by the dentist. I decided to write her a letter detailing my discontent. By writing the letter, I felt as if I was taking my power back. How dare she be so presumptuous?

A couple of days went by and I received a response with no apology. It turns out, I owed her office two dollars; due to a mix up with my co-pay. I sent her two dollars in cash and in a hand written note, told her where to shove it. I told my co-workers what happened and asked them kindly to boycott her office. It’s been almost 15yrs and I have not experienced bias by another health care professional. I still have the same medical doctor as well, he earned my trust and respect for standing up for me.

There are great medical professionals out there who are not biased. But if something like this happens to you there are protections under the law. If you feel a health care provider has discriminated against you, you may file a civil rights complaint with U.S. Department of Health & Human Services Office of Civil Rights at http://www.hhs.gov/ocr/office/index.html

For almost a half century, Olivia Newton-John has been making music and movie magic. With 100 million albums sold, four Grammy Awards, numerous Country Music, American Music, Billboard and People’s Choice Awards, an Emmy Award, ten #1 hits and more than 15 top 10 singles and star of the most successful movie musicals of all time, Grease, Olivia has earned her crown of the famed Las Vegas strip.

Newton-John is currently holding court at the Flamingo Las Vegas, performing her retrospective residency “Summer Nights,” which earned an extended run through January, 2016. The production features an eight-piece band and takes fans on a journey through her accomplished life and career. Her show should be called “Catch Me If You Can” because it was not easy getting Olivia to slow down to speak with me. I caught up with the Superstar while on holiday to discuss her activism, career, wellness and her friendships with legendary Vegas headliners past and present.

Hi Olivia, you have publicly advocated marriage equality, performed at numerous Pride events and even recorded a song promoting safe sex. I’m curious, what prompted you to speak up on LGBT issues?

Well, my LGBT fan base has always been one of my most devoted and loving throughout my career. I feel as an artist it is important to use the world stage (so to speak) to bring awareness to issues that really matter to me and that have an impact on everyone.  I recorded “Love and Let Live” which was important to me because I was losing so many people I knew to AIDS – it was terrible — so that song was my way of using my voice to bring awareness to the topic, which in 1988, was still taboo to speak about. As for marriage equality – love is love – no one has the right to judge or deny couples who love each other the ability to make a marriage commitment. I was thrilled when I learned of the recent Supreme Court ruling!

Over the years, your music has touched and inspired so many, “Magic” has a powerful message of finding inner strength. Where do you draw your strength?

I draw my strength by the love and support of my husband John, my daughter and my dear friends who have been with me through thick and thin! I’ve been so lucky to have had some wonderful songwriters and producers in my life, especially – John Farrar who is a lifelong dear friend. He wrote or produced most of my hits, including the song “Magic” which has such a universal and positive message. In fact, my daughter Chloe Lattanzi and I just recorded a new dance version with some new lyrics, produced by the amazing Dave Audé to coincide with the 35th anniversary of Xanadu which was released in movie theaters back in 1980. Where has the time gone??

Vegas being a mecca for many icons like Celine, Cher, Bette and now Britney, Mariah and soon JLo. Do you feel there a comradery among performers?

Absolutely! We all know each other. Unfortunately, we work at the same times and it can be hard to see each other because of our schedules- I admire them all. Cher and I shared the same manager for years – so we go way back. Bette and I have known each other a long time too- Bette’s daughter and my daughter went to school together and we were part of a “mom’s group” for many years when they were very young. Britney was my next door neighbor in Malibu and we would see each other in the neighborhood! I love Celine and JLo is going to be a wonderful addition to Vegas. I look forward to catching up with the girls, if we can make it work! A few weeks’ ago Mariah invited me over for a Memorial Day BBQ. It was great to catch up with her – what an amazing singer songwriter she is- it was an unexpected and fun night!

Though I did have traditional chemo treatments, I coupled them with complimentary therapies which we are now offering at the ONJCWC. http://www.oliviaappeal.com/

Headlining your own Vegas show must be pretty vigorous. How you do get “Physical”?

It’s a tough schedule but I really am loving being in Vegas. The only challenge is the dry air – that’s usually a singer’s first comment about Vegas. I stay hydrated, drink lots of water and tea! I love to walk and take hikes with my husband and my dog Raven in Red Rock Canyon. It’s so beautiful out there – if you come to Vegas you should try an afternoon away from the Strip to take in the area’s wonderful natural beauty. Being in nature is something I need to do every day – I need to be out in Mother Nature! And, of course I try to eat healthy and organic foods!

Is a Vegas show something you always wanted to do?

I’ve been playing Vegas since the early 70s! I have to say I’ve performed in so many different showrooms here through the years and I’ve had fun but, never saw myself doing a residency. But, oh my goodness Vegas has changed – it used be just casinos and gambling. Now it has amazing restaurants, spas, shows and wonderful shopping! My husband and I are really loving it here and, it’s the most normal “job” and schedule I’ve ever had! There is no traveling, I get to sleep in the same bed every night, and have a regular schedule – it’s lovely!

What’s the most fun part of the show for you to perform?

Well, I have so many great moments every night – every show is special and to sing and play with my band – the best in Vegas I may add! – is always fun! I take the audience on a musical journey with me through my career. I’ve been lucky to have had some wonderful songs in my career that I hope touch the audience in some way!

As an actress and having starred in one of the most iconic films of all time, was Grease just a blast to make? It sure looked like a good time!

It was a very special time in my life. The energy on that set was magical – we had no idea it was going to become the ongoing success it has!! We truly had so much fun – it was a summer I will never forget!

In Grease, we saw you transform from the “sweet and innocent” Sandy to the “bad girl” Sandy, which one do you identify with more?

Oh, I think there’s a little bit of both of them in all of us…don’t you? But, I’m not going to tell you which one I identify with more! (Laughing).

What can fans expect next?

I’ll be in Vegas working on my show. I’ll be promoting my dance single with my daughter Chloe. I’m working on a new CD too. Of course, I have ongoing events to raise funds for the Wellness Center. That’s all keeping me pretty busy! But right now, I’m going to enjoy the rest of my holiday!!

It was just a few years ago, Bethenny Frankel appeared to have it all. Tears may have been shed but Frankel remains a relatable work in progress. Thanks Bethenny for sharing your inspirational journey and for putting the REAL in Real Housewives.  🙂

Girl Code

Tensions were high on last night’s episode of Real Housewives of New York City. Although the girls were on holiday in Turks and Caicos, they could not seem to chill out. After a heated dinner debate over the use of the “F-Bomb” – Heather and Carole decided to call it a night while the rest of the group went out to party.

The next morning, Heather woke up to find a naked man sleeping in the adjacent room. Heather was pissed and wanted to know who let the stranger spend the night. She stormed into Ramona’s room demanding answers but Ramona was too hung over to deal. LuAnn was also sleeping and did not appreciate Heather barging into her room giving her the 3rd degree.

Did Heather overreact or is LuAnn right in thinking it was no big deal?  I say, lighten up…and don’t be so uncool!

Amy Winehouse’s father told her she was “just fine” when managers pleaded with the singer to enter rehab soon after the success of her first album “Frank,” back in 2003. The new documentary film Amy directed by Asif Kapadia, makes you wonder if Winehouse’s fate could have been less tragic if she had the right people around her.

The film provides an intimate portrait of the troubled singers journey as an 16yr old girl turned global superstar. In 2011 at the age of 27, Amy suffered a tragic death when her heart stopped beating from years of stress on her body brought on by an eating disorder and substance abuse. Her death and the famous images of Amy’s downward spiral have over shadowed her raw talent as a singer-song writer. Her voice, reflective of a soul much older.
